Ontario Minimum Wage Set to Increase on October 1, 2024: What Employers Need to Know
As of October 1, 2024, Ontario’s minimum wage will rise from $16.55 to $17.20 per hour. This change ensures that employees working in Ontario receive fair compensation in line with inflation and the rising cost of living.
Student Minimum Wage Increase
In addition to the general wage hike, employers should be aware of changes affecting student employees. The student minimum wage will increase from $15.60 to $16.20 per hour. This rate applies to students under the age of 18 who work 28 hours per week or less during the school year, or full-time during school breaks.
How This Impacts Employers
It’s important for employers and HR professionals to prepare for this adjustment and ensure that payroll systems are updated to reflect these changes by October 1. If you employ students, now is the time to review their schedules and pay rates to stay compliant with Ontario labour laws.
